big rock candy mountain

Life is being lived here in Chile. I'm really enjoying myself. Of course I would like to have more money and more people here. I enjoy sharing my stories with you and hearing about your stories, but this place would be much different if i could share it with the familiar faces I love.

I'm really enjoying teaching. I'm always so happy after my classes. They usually go so smoothly and those that don't, I know what I could improve on for next time. I feel like I do a good job and it was actually proven in one of my classes last Thursday. My school has surprise observations of our classes every now and then and my first one was last thursday. I was prepared for my class and I knew how I was going to present the material. I was not aware of the visit until my students (who knew the observation was going to take place) filled me in. I went on with my class the way I had planned...I couldn't do anything about it now so I guess I just had to see if I was on the right page. 20 minutes into my class, my TEFL trainer Katie came in and watched 10-15 minutes of my class. The following day, I met up with her and the first words she said were "I really liked your class! I was excellent!". Phew!

Friday was a good day. I met up with Breanna and we walked around Providencia for a bit. I had been thinking about my sister a lot that day because it was her 18th birthday. I am very used to be away from family but I really wished I could have been there for her big day. To me birthdays arent a reason to expect gifts from others...but to give yourself gifts and reasons to look at the world a little differently that day. I don't know what it is about birthdays, but that day for me, really gives me an appreciation for how far I've come in so little time.
 Happy Birthday Rebecca!

Later I had a meeting at my school and I met up with Jamie after. We made dinner at my apartment and then invited some friends over for drinks and a night out. A lot of the crew that night were teachers. My friend Corina was back in town after going on a trip around south america with her fiance after completing the TEFL class we took together and so she joined us for the drinking.

We played some really fun nerdy drinking games and headed out at around 1 30. We couldnt find a good bar and by the time we spent  a little while in one bar...we were ready to call it a night.

Sunday, April 26th was by far one of the most memorable days here in Chile for me. Leslie invited me to go hiking with her, Wendy and Wendy's friend Cristobal. I was so close to saying no because they were leaving soon after she had invited me and I had yet to eat and get dressed. I wasnt sure if I had the energy or the motivation to do it.

I decided to go.

I cant even describe to you the amazing feeling of looking up at a mountain before you hike up it compared to the feeling of looking down from it. It took us so long to hike because Leslie and I are beginners at this sort of thing and at one point we thought we couldnt do it. But we pushed on and with short breaks along the way with pauses to take pictures and drink water, we made it to the very top.
4 days later...my legs are still sore. BUT that fades with time...the memories from that day will forever be with me and they will always mean so much.

Here are some of my favourite pictures from the great adventure

on our way up...stopping to admire the cacti...and take a photo shoot break

 still going...

and stopping to take in the view. just beautiful!

and...little by little...we finally made it to the top of Pochoco!

we made it to the top! resting and taking it all in. we also met a dog at the top. we named him Chaco.

there was a lot to see and admire.

it really did make for one of the best days ever!

i would definitely recommend putting something like this on your list of things to do. it gives you a real appreciation for your surroundings.
love and miss
besitos

we walk. we walk.. we walk...caminamos

this entry is going to resemble some sort of listita (little list - my favourite spanish word...however, in following with my writing style - it wont be very chico (little) )

april 8 - I decided to venture back to Patronato and show Breanna and her friend Stef around. We didn't do any shopping but just looked around. It was a nice day but super hot there. There are tons of things there so you can definitely spend a while there.

On thursday april 9 - breanna came over to my place for some drinks and we walked over to her friends apartment which is just a 5 min walk or so from mine. we stayed there for a little while and then went out to a bar where we met my friend adam. the bar was in bellavista. it's called opium and it was pretty small but really cool. i love going out with my friend adam because he is fearless on the dance floor. he just looks like a crazy over active robot and its 3 parts awesome 2 parts weird. but i love it. after being at opium for a few hours we decided to check out the tried and true bar we sometimes visit called bar constitucion. buuut there was a line and so we had to wait...and then we realized it was already around 3 oclock so we just went home. Because Adam lives so close to Breanna, we just went back to their street. I stayed over at Breanna's place so I didnt have to pay more to get myself the rest of the way home. It's must cheaper to just walk home the next morning - and when you're a teacher in Chile, cheap is always a good thing.

april 10 - yes, good friday. imagine an empty city, a girl wearing smoky clothes from the night before when she went out to a bar. it is 10 am - i wake up in breannas apartment, i have not showered, i have no brushed my teeth - i dont look awful...but i dont smell clean haha. i decide now is the best time to talk the 20-30 minute walk home. as i walk along the street back home, i realize that this day is good friday, it's a holiday, no one is out in the street and the city is quiet. what a perfect day to walk home in bar clothes (i was wearing jeans, a tank top and a little cardigan...nothing too bar-ish). i take one of the side streets back home because its even quieter than the main street and it makes for a pretty little walk. However on this particular morning, it makes for an interesting walk home. I am more than halfway home, a man is approaching me on a bicycle and suddenly stops. he asks (in spanish) if I have a minute to talk. I say "si" he asks if I am a Chileana (Chilean girl), I laugh and say no. He asks what language I speak, I say English. This commences the interesting English conversation.

"I am a professional fashion photographer in Santiago...I know I don't look very professional this morning (I think...pff neither do I pal)."
"Oh cool, I love photography!" I respond as to not jump to conclusions but also to seem politely uninterested. I'm thinking at this point that either this dude can see potential in my unmade/unshowered self..or he just has a tool box of really inventive and original pick up lines.

"You are very beautiful and I have been looking for a new model for a while now but I have not found anyone with such a unique look as yourself."
I give this man more time to explain his business and his vision...for two reasons. I'm not sure if I believe him and I'm not rude enough to just walk away haha.
If this man is indeed being creepy - I'm not getting the creepy vibe...which for a second makes me wonder if this is actual true.
He says he does not have a business card with him...he then asks for my email address. THIS is the moment I feel like this is definitely not real. I write down an email address (in case this IS real) that is not connected to my full name (incase this is not real)...
We talk for almost 10 minutes I think... I leave knowing the only information he has of me is my email address and my age. He does not know anything else about me...which I also think is strange for someone scouting out a potential new model. I walk away, call my friend breanna of the hilarious news and she is ecstatic! "what if it IS real?!?!" she says. I am not convinced.

I go home, shower, tell my roommate Felipe - that knows what Chilean men are like and to my surprise he tells me that it could actually be real. He says that a lot of his friends think I could be a model...and that they think I resemble Scarlet Johansen (this is the 3rd time in Chile so far that I have heard this - even my spanish teacher told me...in spanish by the way...that she thought i looked a lot like Scarlet Johansen). Felipe has friends in the production/advertising industry and offers that if I am interested, he can see about getting me some type of job. This to me - is hilarious. I think I am attractive yes...but a model? I dunno.
Either way...It is 11:30 am by now...and I am elated haha.
Later that day, Jamie comes over. We make pizza (ok fine...we throw a pre made pizza in the oven) and guacamole. we watch the movie "Righteous Kill". I fall asleep during the movie...but feel like I enjoyed the parts I was awake for haha.

note: received no word from my new photographer friend

saturday april 11 - the feast
Jamie invited me to a big BBQ with our new friends. One of the guys he went to high school with (his name is Peter) is actually living in Santiago right now just a short walk away from Jamie's apt with his fiance and one of their other friends. We've visited them a few times and they are really nice people. We went with Aleszu (Peter's roommate) to this very huge food market called La Vega. Its both a beautiful and crazy place. Beautiful because it has fresh food for miles basically. Crazy because there are people everywhere and all the different smells that mix together....arent always heavenly. We bought chicken, seafood, hamburger meat and tons and tons of veggies. They have an outdoor grill at their apartment building and so we prepared the food there and had a feast. it was BEAUTIFUL! I've started eating much less meat than I usually do, and so this day was fantastically delicious.
After the BBQ, we just drank in their apartment and my friend Breanna came over for a little while. We listened to music, chatted and they had this cool book their called the Proust Questionnaire.

Proust is a French writer that began answering the same questionnaire that was in a book belonging to his friend. This questionnaire is about one's personality and it appears in Vanity Fair magazine each month. You can also buy the book that shows people of history and their responses to the questionnaire as well as many blank pages for other people to answer on.
So I filled out a page, as did my friend Jamie. I couldnt think of answers for all of the questions but maybe when I visit them again, I will complete it. Here is a link to the Vanity Fair Proust questionnaire:

april 12th - happy easter
This was the first Easter that I did absolutely nothing. I spent all day in my room pretty much just watching movies and being lazy. By the time it was 5 pm or so I realized I hadnt eaten any chocolate on Easter. i felt this was a shame...so I went up to the store and bought a couple bars haha. That my friends, was my Easter in Chile. I considered the feast on the previous day to be my Easter dinner.

april 13
Paul and I teach the same student - but on different days. He has mondays and wednesdays and i have tuesdays and thursdays. We meet in the mornings to discuss the class before - what was done, problems the student had and so on. its really nice to have something constant like that...a little morning meeting complete with tea or coffee. Unfortunately, that morning, i drank too much coffee. It made me dehydrated...and well...you dont need to know the details. I was supposed to go to Patronato with Femi later that day and so when I could pull myself together and snap out of my dehydratedness - we were on our way! Femi is very fun (but very dangerous to shop with). She's so fun because she loves it and could spend all day doing it, dangerous, because she spends and spends which makes me want to spend. However - I bought two things. A $12 pair of jeans and a $4 pair of lazy pants. HELLO good buys! (for you canadians - thats a zellers add reference).  I had to teach later that evening so I couldn't stay out for too long but I had a blast none the less.

april 14 - intensive class commences
on tuesday i started teaching with this team of teachers. there was a student who needed one week of intensive classes. how intense? 9 hours a day! yeah. so he had 3 hour sessions with 3 teachers per day. this went on for one week. the coolest part about it was that because he was there for 9 hours, the teacher that taught during lunch time - also got to go out for lunch with him. Which I was able to do 2 times during the week :) the best part about that...was that the school paid for the lunch...on a budget of course but it was still great!

april 17th
i had to work on getting my visa processed and so i went to the "extranjeria office" downtown. the line was SO long and there wasnt much layout and order to this particular building. But eventually, after almost two hours, I got the paperwork I was waiting to receive which meant I had a temporary work permit that allowed me to stay an extra 2 months in the country. This is was the first step to obtaining my actual work visa. Seriously...there must be about 10 steps.
I had to go back to my school to show them the papers and while I was at the school, I met one of the teachers I hadn't seen before. Her name is Airlie. We went out for coffee after and then hung out at her place. She also lives about a 10-15 minute walk from my apartment.

april 18 - walk walk walk
I decided to meet up with Wendy and Leslie and go for a walk. I told them about a place I heard you could find hula hoops. I was looking to buy a hula hoop for exercise. some of my friends have joined gyms and things like that...i dont have money or motivation for that. sooo i thought a hula hoop would be a good little investment haha. We walked all the way from the Santa Lucia metro down to Estacion Central. I know this doesnt mean much to you...but when I told people this...they thought I had made a mistake in the metro station names. I must have meant somewhere closer. NOPE! Santa Lucia to Estaction Central. It was pretty far.
here's a map:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Santa+Lucia+Metro,+Santiago&daddr=Estaci%C3%B3n+Central+-+Chile&hl=en&geocode=%3BFTyTAf4dvYfJ-yl5AYVk-MRiljE387q6URp2oA&mra=pe&mrcr=0&dirflg=w&sll=-33.447062,-70.661834&sspn=0.035235,0.055275&ie=UTF8&ll=-33.449991,-70.661402&spn=0.017617,0.027637&z=15

We had a great walk...but sadly, did not find a hula hoop. yes, the hunt continues. We met up with breanna at an ice cream place (which has ice cream that tastes like.....amazingness) and chatted for a while and later that night Leslie and Wendy came over to my place for a little pre dance party dance party. We went out to Bar Constitucion later that night and danced till the bar closed at 5 30am. It made for a fantastic day!

april 19th - mas caminando (more walking)
I called Jamie to see what he was up to for the day. Nothing he said. And my plans were the same. I was thinking we could go for a little walk but instead we went for a 'little' walk to Bellavista and then walked around Bellavista a few times. On our way there we walked along the smelly river. Its called the Mapocho River and its kind of an eye sore...and a nose sore (aka..it stinks!). We walked over a nice...and tall bridge and took some pics from the top.
This is me

After getting to Bellavista and walking around for a while there, we decided to eat at some crappy pizza place. Please, if you ever come to Chile - do not visit a telepizza 'restaurant'. I did not get sick...which was a plus...but it was not enjoyable either. After the day of walking, I went over to Wendy's apartment for a Sushi making night. Our Italian friend Ameriga taught us how to make sushi and so we thought we would try on our own. Wendy invited some friends over and we gave it a whirl. Here are some pictures from the sushi making process:

and so we realized that while we were making it, the rice was not exactly...going to work. It had been cooling in the fridge for far too long and had lost most of its stickiness = no bueno (no good). So we made due with what we had...and in the end we had good tasting...but embarrassing looking sushi.

we ended up having a very fun and interesting night of sushi making. Next time, we will be more careful with the cooling process lol.

april 20
this was the day of my last class with my intensive student. I had him for the 3 hour class that fell on lunch time and so we went out to a nice indian restuarant for lunch. The food was great and for most of the class we just had a conversation. It was a really nice way of getting paid for three hours haha.

april 22
femi and i got together and went for a little walk. we got lunch from a sushi restuarant near me (its probably the best sushi ive had here...and for the cheapest price. it's around 2,200-2,500 pesos  or $4.50 - $5.20 for 8 pieces of beautifulness). the sushi in santiago is really good because they have access to fresh fish being right on the coast. After our sushi lunch, we walked around Providencia a bit and looked in some art supply stores for fun and then on our way back from our walk, we saw some people selling pirated DVDs on the street. The sidewalks of the main streets of Santiago are seriously like a mall. You can buy shirts, earrings, necklaces, pants, DVDs, toys, food, socks and I've even seen underwear being sold on the sidewalks. Femi and I chose 3 dvds for 5,000 pesos (about 10 bucks). These movies are all downloaded and burned onto DVDs and so the quality is usually very good and they are all in English. This was my first street buy...but it definitely wont be the last.

thats all for now. stay tuned
love and miss as always.

i espeaka de spanglish.

this is a long one...you might wanna make a snack...

first part written march 31st

my first week of work and spanish classes has just finished. it was amazing to teach again. i already wrote in this blog about my first english class i taught. it was on march 21st (yes a saturday). then on wednesday i was hanging out with a friend after my spanish class and got a call from my boss. he mentioned that there was a new student who needed to start classes the next day (thursday). so i agreed to take it. im so glad i did because he is such a good student and so fun. he's really excited about improving his english (which is already fairly good!). he had a lot of free time from thursday -monday so i taught him 3 classes. i also received a call from my boss on monday (march 30) about picking up another class. Now i am like an all-star teacher. don't ask why but a lot of my friends that started the same time as me only have one class...whereas i have 3 now. this is awesome news because obviously more classes means more money.

i taught a class this morning (the first time i taught these new clients). there are two students in the class and i teach them at their office building downtown in santiago centro.....at 8 am haha. so it's a little early for my liking...however i can come home and take a nap. plus i do really enjoy living a FULL day sometimes. so that will be nice i think.

i'm into my second (and last....for now anyways) week of spanish classes. i think im doing pretty well. i guess you dont know unless you try right? i try to take risks in the language by talking about things i dont really need to...or i try explaining things in detail...even if i know the grammar is a hot mess. i enjoy practicing spanish and experimenting...but only in an environment i feel comfortable in. if you've ever had the opportunity to attempt to speak a language to those that only know the language you are struggling to communicate in, you've noticed that its much easier than struggling to communicate with people that speak the language you are trying to communicate in as well as the one that you know like the back of your hand. it just feels easier...becuase when you try to speak with someone that only knows the language you are stuggling with...you can feel proud that at least you know SOME of another language other than your own. I don't need to feel like I'm smarter or better than the person i'm communicating with...but it just makes it more comfortable i guess.

i've gotten to the point in spanish class where i'm helping correct my fellow classmates mistakes haha. and that feels pretty good. especially because these people (most of them) have had lessons in spanish before...but a long time ago whereas this is my first time ever taking a spanish class. of course i've tried teaching myself for the past couple months in chile...but i still feel like this is an accomplishment.

this past weekend was a really fun one. on friday i didn't really do much but on saturday night my friend femi (from my tefl teacher training class) came over.
we drank a little piscola (can't remember if i described piscola before but pisco is a hard liquor here and the cola part is...well, coke haha. its a super popular chilean drink) and went out to paint the town red...sorta.

we met up with my friend breanna and some of her roomies and then made our way down to a bar in a cool barrio (neighbourhood) called bellavista (pronounced baya-veesta). the bar was super fun and really cool. i felt like there were a ton of guys there in comparison to girls but it definitely was not a gay bar. there were not a lot of foreigners there and so the girls i went with were hot commodities. we danced with some of the guys there that seemed more harmless than others haha. it was fun. we left the bar at 4 30 which is actually early to ditch a bar in santiago. most people stay out until 5 30 or 6...and sometimes even later. my friend femi slept over at my place because it's pretty expensive for her to travel back to her place by taxi (which is located in las condes...the neighbourhood my host family lives in).

the next day...sunday, i hung out with my friend jamie. he has a pool on the roof of his apartment and so we laid out in the sun by the pool and then went to his friend's place for a bbq. they bbq-ed a huge salmon and some shishkabobs. it was DELICIOUS! apparently one of the guys there bought the salmon from a fish market and paid only 4,800 pesos....like...8-9 bucks. crazy! it was lots of fun. one of the guys there belongs to a chilean band...its a CCR cover band and they are playing later this week on thursday night. i will have to go to check it out! i'm definitely interested in seeing more live music here. the friends i've made here (although amazing and so much fun) they aren't as into going out to see a band perform as say...going out to dance. im not apposed to dancing...however live music can always make for a refreshing night.

april 6th

for the first few days of my second week of spanish class i was in class alone because the other woman i took classes with was on vacation. that was really fun actually to be in class by myself because i didn't care what i was saying and i didn't have to wait for anyone else to respond when i knew the answer already. and on the other hand...they didn't have to wait for me when i didn't know the answer. on wednesday however...that all changed. i came into class on wednesday so excited that i would be the only one in class and for the first 10 minutes...i was.

but then....joy walked in.

joy is a 30 year old woman traveling through Peru, Chile and Argentina while taking spanish classes. she is traveling alone and is desperate for friends. in the first part of the class when she joined, i was struggling with a concept that apparently she knew really well. that was pretty much the only time she showed me up in class...
However - during our 3 hour spanish class, we have a 15 minute break at the halfway point. so after 1.5 hours of her struggling a little bit and the teacher asking me to "ayuda" (help) or point out her mistakes, she says to me "I think I need to talk to Marie (the coordinator of the classes) and ask to be moved up to the next level because I feel like I already know all of this".
WHAT?!?!?!
I was a little shocked mainly because she was claiming that her spanish was better than mine after the indisputable fact that i had been correcting her mistakes for the whole class! To be fair and not exaggerate like I like to do so much I will say fairly that the ratio of her corrections for me compared to my corrections for her were probably:
10 : 45
that's probably an accurate number. that's not to say that I only made 10 mistakes in 3 hours...but those were the mistakes she could correct of mine in comparison to my ability to correct her. clearly i am still a little annoyed by her statement.....
so being the nice person i am...i suggested that if she felt it wasn't too demanding of her, I was sure that Marie could help her out. (eye roll).

After class joy asked what I was up to and i was supposed to be meeting a friend later that afternoon so I let her know that but said that if she didn't have anything to do, I was going back to my place for a little bit and she could join me (even though i had no desire to spend any more time than necessary with this girl). We came back to my apartment and chatted about Chile and traveling and whatnot. I told her that I loved Chile and that it was really starting to feel like home for me. Because it was her first day in Chile I let her know about the strange quirks of Chile but that overall...i loved the place. I did share my opinion though about how I felt that Chileans had never heard of the words "conservation of resources". The concept that water especially was a resource and might one day run out...had never crossed their mind. "Why do you say that?" she asked.
I told her that at any given moment in Chile, someone was watering their grass or the small patches of grass in front of their apartment building or something. I know this from trusting what my own eyes have seen since the day I arrived and that is that - every piece of grass has always been and will always be showered with water under unnatural circumstances - water from a hose...and not clouds (on a regular basis I might add). Her abrasive response was that if no one watered the grass, it would all be yellow and that would be a problem for 'Santiagoins' because the green grass makes their city look beautiful and think of how much revenue they bring in due to appearance of their city. No joy wasn't just giving an alternate opinion...oh she was serious and adiment about this point. I'm sorry joy....I don't know about you, but, I did not come to Chile for the grass....

I had just met this girl 3 hours earlier, offered to hang out with her at my apartment and she shuts down my idea of Chile...a place that I have started calling home 2 months ago...and she had just arrived earlier that day. Give me a break joy.

maybe joy is a nice lady...maybe its a fact for other people that know her well...but for me...i didn't agree. i had to spend 2 more days in spanish class with this woman...and i was not excited about it. that's all i have to say about joy...

thursday april 2nd was a good day. i taught my 8 am class downtown at the office building and then had spanish class and later that night, jamie, joseph and i went out to a bar where jamie's friend's band was playing. we met up with our friend paul there and it was so much fun. the band was fantastic! they were a CCR cover band (cause cover bands are hugely popular here for some reason) and they sounded excellent. we left a little earlier than expected because of jamie's sudden drunkenness but it was a really fun night none the less.

saturday was also a great day. i taught my morning class to one of my favourite students (actually...i dont have any students I don't like...) which is good because it's a 3 hour class and we go over a lot of grammar so it helps that she's a good sport. i got home  with my friend Leslie to our mutual friend Stefano's apartment for a bbq. (yes bbqs are very popular here). He lives really close to me and we actually met him through my roommate Felipe.
speaking of Felipe, here is a picture of us!

so anyways Stefano had a little bbq on top of his apartment building where they have a bbq area and a pool! it was pretty hot out but the water in the pool was pretty cool. i had been in chile for 2 months and had not been swimming...so with this in mind i braved the cold water and so did everyone else. there are windows on the side of the pool that people on a nearby room can see in (kinda weird...but it was fun to have in order to take pictures of us!). here is one of my faves from that day.

later that night my TEFL teacher Katie was having a party at her apartment and so I met up with Jamie and Paul at Pauls apartment downtown.

He had a few friends over that are living in Chile but are from Germany. They were really cool and fun to hang out with. We went out to a nearby pizza place and had some mad delicious pizza and had some drinks back at Paul's. After that we went on over the Katie's apartment. We all hung out chatting about teaching and things like that. My friend Femi and her boyfriend arrived and my friend Joseph came later.

We played charades (in spanish of course so i needed a translator for some of the words haha) and danced and stuff. it was really fun. Katie's boyfriend (the guy with the white and grey/green shirt) is a photographer but he also loves to cook so we had some great food at the party as well! and their whole apartment is decorated with his photos that he has taken over the years. it was a fun place and i enjoyed the company.

on the 6th (monday) was my first week day in two weeks where i didn't have to get out of bed. I didn't have spanish class because my two free weeks were over and I didn't have to teach any english classes on mondays. So I was supposed to go to this street called patronato which is located in downtown santiago (here is a map) with my friend Leslie but she was busy.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=santiago,+chile&sll=-33.432802,-70.642304&sspn=0.017764,0.027637&ie=UTF8&ll=-33.432229,-70.644021&spn=0.017764,0.027637&z=15&iwloc=A

i called jamie to see if he wanted to go to this phenomenon called patronato. he said yes and so we went. we took the subway down and walked around. when we reached patronato i probably resembled a starving child in a candy store. what is patronato im sure you're wondering....its a massive street with clothing stores all along the street (on both sides) AND out on the sidewalks are stalls where clothing is also sold.

the fantastic thing about this place is that the clothing is CHEAP! suuuper cheap. you can buy jeans for 4,000 to 6,000 pesos (about 8-14 bucks or so). so if jeans are that cheap imagine how cheap the shoes, purses, dresses, tops and sweaters are.....yeah. it's kind of like heaven...but with more dirt and ghettoness. i havent been there...but im assuming heaven isn't very ghetto. i hear about this place by my TEFL teacher Katie who is from the States but has lived in Chile for 4 or 5 years now...she knows all the good places haha. I said thank you to her for letting know about the place and also informed her that I probably would be boycotting all malls in Chile for as long as I lived here because of Patronato haha.

that is all for now. I am finishing this post on April 12th so I still have to write more...however I think I should give your eyes a break haha. i hope you enjoyed it.

thanks for reading!
un beso (a kiss). I'm not sure if I've explained why I'm so kissy since I've come to Chile. Chileans greet each other and say goodbye (chao) with a kiss on the cheek. I greet my students when they walk into class with a kiss on the cheek and that is how I greet and say goodbye to my friends here as well (whether they are chilean or american or canadian). and when i overhear people's phone conversations they say "un beso chao!" right before they hang up. it's very sweet.

love and miss! and happy easter! x

do it with a .heart. wide open

title from John Mayer's song 'Say'.

-"you better know that in the end it's better to say too much than to never say what you need to say again"

I believe that when you make any decision in life you are essentially choosing between two paths: playing it safe or taking a risk (basically letting life lead you). I do not believe and never will believe (i know i know...never say never...well in this case...I will never believe:) that letting life lead you is careless or "dumb".

It's obvious that taking a risk can lead to really scary things. You could get hurt (physically, mentally or emotionally), you could lose your job or money perhaps. If you take a risk...you are opening your heart to the positive and negative things it may bring and sometimes this can change your entire life story.

The other option also has obvious reasons for being chosen or not. Playing it safe usually means there is an obvious choice that although it is not risky...it's the easiest one. Maybe it involves less hard work or determination, maybe it involves no planning or preparation, maybe it involves little to no bad consequences...BUT it's usually always the most boring option that probably doesn't bring much happiness or "umph" to your life story.

I've seen it happen. I've seen people continually choose the safe path. They close themselves off to some of the most amazing experiences they could ever have. like that cliche statement that goes a little something like "you never know till you try". well i've learned that it's true. so very true.

Yesterday I watched the movie 'The Pursuit of Happiness" for the first time. If you have not seen this movie, please do (especially if you need inspiration). it's a story about struggle in life and the hardships Chris Gardener faced. it is based on a true story and it is really inspiring and touching. it is not cheesy...so those of you turning up your noses or cringing at the words "inspiring" or "touching" please be open minded. im mentioning this film right now because it shows the pros and cons of taking risks. risks can really make other people look down on you. usually when you take a risk...you are choosing to do something out of the ordinary. you stray from the population's path of safety and you try to make your own. it also shows how risks can benefit a person and really change their life. please check it out. it's a beautiful story. ps...i cried like a baby after.

So..if you are trying to make a decision now about something that could change your life story...please consider your options carefully. im sick of hearing about people that limit themselves and close themselves off to amazing opportunities because its too scary or too life changing and then complain about how monotonous their life is. come on people...you've only got one life...why not LIVE and LOVE it?!
